Market Volatility Highlights the Case for Defensive Positioning

John Stanton |

Last week delivered a sharp reminder that even the strongest market themes can reverse quickly. AI and Data Center Indexes fell 12% and 20%, respectively, while the broader S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite declined 2.7% and 3.4%. The selling was concentrated in high-flying technology and infrastructure names that had driven much of the year’s gains.

What Drove the Sell-Off

The catalyst was the outcome of the midterm elections, which shifted the political landscape and raised the prospect of greater scrutiny on the AI infrastructure build-out.

Investors grew concerned that a more interventionist Congress could slow data-center permitting, tighten oversight of electricity and water use, and reassess tax incentives that have supported rapid expansion. These political worries compounded existing fundamental questions,  such as elevated valuations, heavy capital spending with uncertain near-term returns, rising borrowing costs, and growing local opposition to large data-center projects,  which  had already left the AI trade vulnerable.

When sentiment turned, the most leveraged and highly valued segments bore the brunt of the decline. Broader indexes fell as the concentrated leadership that had supported the market gave way.

How Our Value & Dividend Portfolio Responded

In this environment, our Value & Dividend Portfolio maintained a net long exposure of 62%. That deliberate underweight to the most speculative areas of the market allowed the strategy to remain defensively positioned.

While growth-oriented indexes experienced significant volatility, the portfolio held up well relative to the broader market carnage.

Year to date, the approach has continued to outperform, reflecting the benefits of focusing on businesses with durable cash flows, reasonable valuations, and a commitment to returning capital to shareholders.

In periods of elevated uncertainty, this orientation has historically provided ballast when momentum-driven segments correct.

Looking Ahead

Markets will continue to wrestle with the pace of AI investment, the regulatory environment, and the path of interest rates. Periods of sharp sector rotation are normal, but they underscore the value of a process that does not rely on a single theme.
